FedEx has brought a remarkable innovation into monitoring packages other than the traditional tracking number. The FedEX SenseAware is somewhat like a improved alternative for RFID that combines the convenience of a web platform and a sensor which is the same size as a Blackberry. It is initially being sent out to 50 FedEx medical clients this spring.
The SenseAware facilitates real time updates on the package’s status. The device can provide information like location details, temperature and can identify whether the package has been opened or exposed to light. Such details can be transmitted through its integrated light meter, GPS, cellular antennae and an accelerometer that can detect drops from the package. Real time updates can be viewed over a web-based interface. It will initially cost $120 per month but prices may drop as it become available worldwide and with other industries other than the medical sector. Technochasers, do you find the FedEX SenseAware extremely functional?
